WASHINGTON, D.C. -- This week, the Minnesota Credit Union Network, joined by members from across Minnesota, headed to Washington D.C. to advocate for credit unions. The over 120 Minnesota credit union professionals and board members were in Washington D.C. for a record-breaking Governmental Affairs Conference along with more than 6,000 credit union leaders from across the country. The credit union industry's largest advocacy event, GAC, is an opportunity to amplify our collective voice in advocacy and ensure lawmakers fully understand the impact of credit unions on their communities. Members shared stories of the positive community impact of credit unions across the state, in both the Metro Area and throughout Greater Minnesota. Conversations emphasized the importance of preserving the tax status of credit unions, which allows them to continue to do what they do best: focus on serving their members and communities instead of chasing profits. The Minnesota Credit Union Network and its members held meetings with both of Minnesota’s United States Senators: Senator Amy Klobuchar and Senator Tina Smith. Both senators sit on committees relevant to credit unions, with Senator Klobuchar seated on the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senator Smith on the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. Credit unions shared with lawmakers that any limitation or curtailment of the credit union tax status would have a dramatic impact on the $950 million in direct financial benefits Minnesota credit unions provide their members and over $4 billion in economic output in our state.
