ROCHESTER, Minn. - Mayo Employees Federal Credit Union members and staff recently donated $1,800 to the Rochester Flyers, southern Minnesota’s largest Special Olympics chapter. The funds will directly benefit Flyers athletes who compete in 12 individual and team sports. "Any donations are always helpful," said LeAnn Bieber, Rochester Flyers Special Olympics Team Co-Head of Delegation. MEFCU Board Chair Patrick Steward and his wife, Patty, are the parents of a Rochester Flyers’ swimmer. Chief Lending Officer, Steve Flage’s son, Aaron, is a member of the Rochester Flyers bowling team. "My favorite part of being on Rochester Flyers is getting to be around so many amazing people. It is an honor," Flage’s son, Aaron said. Contributions make it possible for Special Olympics athletes to compete and reach goals. Coaches and other volunteers mentor over 300 athletes with intellectual disabilities, ages 8 and older. "We talk a lot in Special Olympics about inclusivity - about being a community. The Rochester Flyers and Special Olympics Minnesota strengthen communities all over our state, every day," Steward said. The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games will be held in the Twin Cities next year. Over 4,000 athletes from all fifty states will compete in 19 sports from June 20-26th.
